England and Welsh Placed in the Same Group for RWC 2027 Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was conducted by rugby icons including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England together with Wales will face off in an identical pool for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a major early clash in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw echoes their memorable meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground contributed to the English team's surprise group stage elimination.

Key Group Pairings

Ireland alongside Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool together, replicating the situation from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, Ireland claimed a convincing win, with Scotland failing to advance to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both impressed as surprise packages in France, round out that Pool D.

Significantly, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet defending champions and top-ranked South Africa before the showpiece match, presuming the South Africans win their assigned pool.

Tournament Implications

If the groups play out according to the current global standings, other top favourites like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would remain separated from the likes of the English and Ireland all the way to the championship decider.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that half of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Hosts Draw Major Fixture

Hosts Australia have been drawn together with their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

Australia will open the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at jump-start the competition.

In other groups, holders South Africa have been paired with the Azzurri, the Lelos and Romania. The French team are grouped with Japan, 2031 hosts the United States and Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will face the Flying Fijians, Spain and Canada as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the twenty who took part in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will feature a last-16 stage for the very first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

Although the winner of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights early on, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – most likely the Italians – in the last 16.

A total of four of the other six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the pool stages.
