Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
